![]() There’s more to do,” it seems to indicate that Filip himself might have a “knife in the darkness” that will have to wait until The Expanse’s final season to come to fruition.Īnd speaking of the Chetzemoka trap, we finally got to see the remaining tricks up Naomi’s sleeve: a spiral maneuver that would make it hard to dock and a desperate space jump using Belter hand signals. When Filip coldly tells his father, “Doesn’t alter your plan. Likewise there’s the sudden chilly resolve shown by Filip, who is shown loading a gun just before failing to react to his father’s news that the Chetzemoka trap didn’t work. The same sort of question mark hangs over Marco himself, who has only rarely appeared actively engaged in a systemwide rebellion. There was even time to explore Monica’s suspicions about the fate of the protomolecule and Bull’s continued disregard for the “skinnies,” even the ones that saved them from annihilation. It gave The Expanse fans the space battle action they’ve been craving while skillfully merging several of the season’s storylines. Starting the episode with Holden’s self-sacrificial burn and blast to buy Alex time to rescue Naomi was totally the right move, though. Even the death of Alex and the onboarding of Clarissa felt more like turning points than resolutions. There’s nothing wrong with that per se, especially since the season does resolve somewhat with the reunion of the Rocinante crew and with Avasarala’s return to power, but Marco is still at large in a severely damaged solar system - and the Martians are apparently just getting started. So it turns out, it seems, that The Expanse season 5 was one giant setup for season 6, the show’s final run. Folioįolios are created when page numbers are placed consistently in the margin, usually above or below the composition. ![]() The height of horizontal gutters should be based on the leading or line-height of the type. The minimum width or height of gutters should be an ’em’ though this should usually be larger to better separate columns from columns and rows from and rows. Typically we think of gutters as the space between columns, but they are also the space between rows. Gutters are the spaces separating modules either vertically or horizontally. On some pages your design may call for a fixed height, though on most pages your design is allowed grow vertically with the content. Online it’s harder to plan for rows as the height of the format is often inconsistent and dynamic. Rows are the horizontal equivalent of columns. More columns leads to more flexibility, but can also make the grid difficult to work with.Ĭolumn widths can be equal or they can vary across a grid. There can be any number of columns in a grid. A large rectangular field might be used for video.ĭesign elements will often be placed inside a field or spatial zone as opposed to a single module.Ĭolumns are vertical bands of modules. A long vertical field might be used for long blocks of text. Each field can be assigned a specific function within the design.Ī long horizontal field might be used to place long horizontal images. Spatial zones are fields of adjacent modules. The upper left corner of a module is considered to be the active corner and the lower right corner, the passive corner. The height would be based on some multiple of the type’s leading or line-height. Ideally the width of a module will be based on the measure of a line of text. When repeated they create columns and rows. Modules are the basic building blocks of grids. Modules are individual units of space that are separated by regular intervals. Aligning type to a baseline can help establish a vertical rhythm in a design. The base of the type sits on the line, hence the term. Type is often aligned to a series of flowlines equally spaced down the page called baselines. ![]() When elements are aligned to the top of a flowline it’s called a hangline as the elements appear to hang from the line. They can be used to help guide the eye across the page and can be used to impose starting and stopping points for text and images to be aligned. Flowlinesįlowlines are horizontal lines that break the space into horizontal bands. Larger margins also help the eye find a place to rest and can be a good area to place subordinate information. Larger margins create more whitespace and help focus attention on the positive space of the design. The smaller the margin the more tension is created. The proportions of margin help to establish the overall tension (or lack of tension) in a composition. Margins are the negative space between the edge of the format and the outer edge of the content. The format defines the live area of a design where type, images, and other media are present. On a website the format is the browser window. In a book or magazine the format is the page. The format is the area in which the design sits. Not every one of these parts needs to be present in every grid.Ī little further down the page I’ve added an image showing these common grid parts, which you hopefully find helpful as you read through their descriptions below. No matter how simple or complex, grids share some common parts, each fulfilling a specific function. Grids act as guides for the placement of elements in a design. Most of the information in this post comes from Timothy Samara’s book Making and Breaking the Grid. I assume other people have had the same trouble searching and thought it might be helpful if this information was more readily available online. I couldn’t find much online and turned to some of the books I have instead. On the knowledge side I sought out definitions for the different parts of a grid, specifically a modular grid. Recently I’ve been trying to expand my knowledge and skills working with typographic grids. ![]() Surfshark is a very simple and approachable VPN provider. For a few years after that, I concentrated more on my career as a software engineer and founded my family. I started gigging regularly, did a lot of busking, went to a full-timing jazz academy for two years, and recorded my first solo CD in auto-production. I found this too restrictive back then and moved on to singer songwriting on my acoustic guitar, experimenting with open tunings, finger picking and guitar effects. I dabbed around with the synths of the eighties and started using computers for sequencing and sound design. In my adolescence I moved on to teaching myself steel string guitar and had vocal training. I’ve taken formal music training during most of my childhood: music theory, dictation, arrangement, harmony, ensemble, classical guitar and a bit of piano. Just turning the Eigenharp on without running EigenD results in a lifeless instrument that simply does nothing.īefore digging into the rest of the review, let me take a brief moment to talk you about my experience as a musician so that you have some idea where I’m coming from. EigenD also configures the Eigenharp’s keys and controllers by sending a model of their behavior and interactions to the instrument itself. Inside EigenD, everything benefits from the full expressiveness of the Eigenharp in all its detail, with some caveats as I’ll explain later. EigenD is required to use the Eigenharp and has to be seen as an inherent part of the instrument that happens to be virtual and outside its physical body. That being said, Eigenlabs recognized the limitations of existing protocols like MIDI and developed the standalone EigenD software to exchange data in very high resolution with the Eigenharp itself. Being limited by the power of an embedded sound module during all this time would obviously be a shame. Since the Eigenharp is an instrument that is very deep and versatile, you can easily be playing it for the rest of your life, like a guitar or a piano. The power of the software is closely tied to the power of the hardware that it runs on and computers evolve rapidly, doubling their performance every couple of years. While Eigenlabs could have combined both inside one shell and embedded a chip, they purposely didn’t. The Eigenharp as a wholeĮvery Eigenharp has to be seen as two parts that intimately work together: the physical instrument that you play and the software that runs on a computer to generate the sound. Many things were different and now that I’ve actually bought my own personal Alpha and sent the review model back, I clearly see how much better the final version is, even though I already found the prototype amazing. ![]() The instrument that I had at my disposal was the final prototype before the actual production models that are being sold now. During this time I worked closely with Eigenlabs and related all my gripes and pain points so that they could be improved upon, and they have! This has allowed me to write this review from the point of view of a musician that has already spent quite some effort on it. I’ve been playing it every day, discovering the instrument and working on my technique. For the past three months, Eigenlabs has loaned me an Eigenharp Alpha. ![]() Make also sure to download its latest update that fixes a number of issues from here.īelow you can also find a video showcasing all the finishing moves of this MUGEN MK game. Lee moved Duffy to Crouch End in London, orchestrating a meeting between Duffy and Suede's ex-guitar player Bernard Butler. Duffy was introduced to Jeanette Lee of Rough Trade Records in August 2004, after singing Richard Parfitt's "Oh Boy". Duffy, now in high demand, appeared on Mint Royale's See You in the Morning as a back-up singer. It later achieved Welsh chart success in 2008, charting at number one on the "Siart C2" music chart. In 2004, following success on Wawffactor, Duffy recorded a three-song Welsh extended play, titled Aimée Duffy, while working part-time in two jobs as waitress and in a fishmongers. She was expected to win but came second to winner Lisa Pedrick. Duffy returned to Wales in 2003 and was invited to appear on Wawffactor, a Welsh television talent show. She also built up a following at Alexander's, a local jazz and blues club in Chester, where she performed with guitarist David Burton from the band The Invisible Wires, and met songwriter Lucia Cordaro, going on to perform and record one of her songs (I Melt). She was advised by a lecturer at Chester University to "Go on the dole, love, and become a singer". Duffy then spent six weeks in Switzerland (before she started college), collaborating with the writer-producer Soren Mounir, under the name Soulego. CareerĪfter finishing her GCSEs in Pembrokeshire, Duffy returned to Nefyn, to live with her father, when she was fifteen, and started singing in various local bands. In reaction to her parents' break-up, her next three years were a rebellious period that included binge drinking and stealing a rowing boat. Duffy said in retrospect, "It was a horrendous thing to do." Her mother and her sisters did not speak to her for about a year afterwards. Aged 15, she ran away back to her father's home in Nefyn. Duffy describes living in the safe house as a dog-eat-dog, claustrophobic and isolating experience. I felt so ill", Duffy recounted in 2008, as reported by the NME.
